He told The Sun he has started writing a show with his friend and getting it on air is his "mission" which he obvs doesn't believe is too grandiose a term at all.
Pop Kulture totally agree there needs to be some sort of show for popstars to showcase their latest offerings as literally the only telly promo available these days is the last 5 minutes of Graham Norton, a 6-8 minute interview on daytime TV or a stint on a panel show. And, even then, the only totally music related panel show, Never Mind the Buzzcocks was axed last year.
What we don't agree with, however, is that Top Of The Pops is the way to go. You see, TOTP was all very well for hearing the latest songs and finding out what was number 1 in the charts but where was the fun? We know it's probably sacrilege to call the BBC's flagship music show for over 40 years boring but...it was a bit, wasn't it? Whereas SM:TV and CD:UK injected fun and, at times, complete lunacy into your Saturday mornings. It allowed and encouraged popstars and celebs to join in, including them in sketches and games and basically allowing them to have a personality.
This is Pop Kulture's official petition to bring SM:TV back to our telly screens. Obviously, our preferred hosts would be the OG line up Ant, Dec & Cat but they're all a tad busy just now; Ant & Dec are hosting celebrations for the Queen between visits to Australia and Cat is a big deal in America and looking after new baby with husband Patrick Kielty in our fave surprise celeb coupling of recent times. So, if they're a bit too tied up to commit to hosting we will absolutely volunteer ourselves for a very small fee (we would literally do it for a bottle of vodka and some breakfast). We have some ideas for some small changes to update it for today's audiences because we are taking this seriously. We feel it is our mission.
The Sketches
The most famous and remembered sketch from SM:TV was C.H.U.M.S which worked so well because Friends was the biggest thing on TV at the time. Or first assignment on board this mission to update SM:TV is to appreciate the shows we all love (or love to hate or hate to love) to watch and make a long running reality show sketch in tribute to the Kardashians, Real Housewives and all those other 'trash TV' shows. Think foam bums, ridic contour and mountains being made out of molehills each week. Our main goal is to have a real life Kardashian guest star in a sketch. Preferably Kris Jenner but we'll take any of them tbh.
Other ideas include: Gogglebox-esque sketch where members of the public watch and comment on the newest music videos and a Come Dine With Me spoof complete with shouty narrator man narrating Little Mix's attempt at a souffle.
The Celebs
YouTubers are a massive deal and we would be foolish to not take advantage of this. Having Zoella et al review the latest jams would be a sure fire way to get views and up our street cred amongst the pre-pubescents. We would also pay tribute to the golden age of pop and SM:TV's 00s heritage by inviting on some of our favourite popstars from back in the day in an as-yet-unnamed-but-undoubtedly-clever feature. Samantha Mumba has been off our screens for far too long tbh.
Interaction
Social media wasn't around in SM:TV's heyday when you had to phone or write into a show to hear your name mentioned on screen or enter a competition. That's all changed now and we would totally be plugged into every social media channel available to us. Letting viewers take control of interviews through Twitter led Q&As, showing backstage snippets on Snapchat, filtering Rihanna on Instagram and, of course, going viral on YouTube as is the done thing these days.
We hope you agree these small changes will make for an excellent updated version of a v missed format and we welcome ideas from third parties as long as it is agreed we take full credit.
Email us to discuss things further at any time, ITV.
